During the running or the 2010 SuperCar Fall Finale, one of our racers, Lane Carey, wanted to undergo a very thorough tech inspection and have the results posted online to dispel some rumors that he had heard concerning the legality of the car. In regard to the legality of his Intake, Wheelbase and a few of other items, he asked that we look over every inch of his newly built 1971 Mustang Mach 1 and document the tech inspection.

Tech inspection on Lane's Mustang started in the engine bay with the air cleaner removed. There was a complete inspection of all casting numbers, including, but not limited to, intake manifold**, head casting number, exhaust manifolds. Block legality was confirmed and consistent with current SuperCar Rules. Lane removed the carb as instructed by the SuperCar Rules Officials and the correct intake material, construction and model intake were checked. The correct appearing carburetor is being used on the Mustang. The rule infraction found in the engine bay was a non-factory appearing passenger side valve cover. The valve cover had been altered to accommodate an aftermarket vacuum pump hose.

**Lane pulled out an aluminum intake manifold, unlike the cast iron intake running on his Mach 1, and explained the rumor going around.

Next we checked wheelbase to confirm the Mustang was set to the correct factory wheelbase. Lane asked that we check that the axles location placement in the wheel well area was correct to dispel additional rumors that he moved the axle forward to help with weight distribution. All measurements were confirmed and no trickery was found.

The Rules Committee spent much time going over the undercarriage of the Mustang. Rear end, anti-roll bar, Suspension components looked at but not limited to: front shocks, springs, tie rod ends, rear leaf springs, etc. The rules infractions found were incorrect rear leaf spring material, unpainted tie rods. An aftermarket rear anti-roll bar was found on the car, but after a discussion, was deemed similar to the use of no-hop bars. Even though these are traction aiding devices, they are hidden up between the frame rails and thus legal per SuperCar Rules.

Next, we moved to Lane's interior, checking for items Lane had specifically noted having issues with. We found no noted rules infractions, just simple requirements we brought to Lane's attention.

A complete look over of all body panels, bumpers and accessories. Rules infractions found: front head light brackets had been modified and would need to be replaced to be legal.

This will be a great tool that can be used by our racers to measure an extreme case of what could be expect when being teched for SuperCar Certification.

The SuperCar Series through our core beliefs has kept its racers free of rumors and hearsay. We pride ourselves on being thorough, precise and cemented to the original intent of factory appearing musclecar racing.

Congratulations Lane!

A lot of time and effort went into your build. I do disagree with the leaf spring deal though. They are a steel based mono leaf that where made to look like a stock multi leaf! And a very fine job I might add!!! Where's the wrong doing? It's very simular in taking a stock battery gutting it and installing a mini inside just like many of the cars have. To me that was a fine peice of trickery.

Anyway still very impressive

Ed

Ed, the leaf spring decision was not easy. The rule as it is written does present a little bit of a grey area.

This is the old rule.

The first part, "Shocks and springs must appear correct." was not an issue. The work to make the leaf spring pack look stock was done very well, no doubt about that.

The second part however, "Composite or other lightweight material leaf springs are not allowed." was what caused an issue. It was determined that by replacing a stock all-steel spring pack with a monoleaf with "dummy leaves" of a different material made for a lightweight spring pack.

The rule we have now is pretty clear. "Leaf springs must be made of the same material and be of the same construction as stock"

I do agree the creativity was on the same level as the lightweight battery trick but there is no rule that prevents anybody from using a light weight but stock appearing battery.
