SUPERCAR SHOOTOUT 2016
ROUND 1
The 2016 season opened with its Ice Breaker race at New England Dragway in Epping New Hampshire. When the racers arrived they had no idea the season would finish so dramatically. Every race, every round will turn out to be important to the eventual Champion. But before you can race, first you must qualify.
Qualifying for the first race found defending champion Ted Daros and his big block Nova at the top spot putting an 11.04 on the board. Billy Atwood and his GTX starts from the number two spot, followed by Ralph Barbagallo and his 71 GTX, Tom TNT Tarzwell in the 4 hole with his potent small block Duster. Rounding out the top five was Rhett Moody with his always formidable Barracuda. Steve Tate qualified 12th in his high powered 4 speed AAR Cuda.

In round one of eliminations Ted put Rhett into the consolation race. Billy took down Kevin Davies and his 6 pack 4 speed Challenger. And Tom put Kevin's brother Bob and his modern B5 blue 6 speed challenger into the consolation race.

Round three found Billy's GTX too much for Toms small block, ending his day and putting Billy into the finals where we have GTX vs GTX with Billy's 70 triumphing over Ralph's 71.

In the consolation races Rhett defeated Don Wilkins and his big block Nova in the first round, and Kevin in the finals to finish the first day of racing.

After round one the points stack up like this:
1 Billy Atwood. 28
2 Tom Tarzwell. 27
2 Rhett Moody. 27
3 Ted Daros. 26
3 Ralph Barbagallo. 26

Round 2

Round two of the 2016 Supercar Shootout resumed at New England Dragway but with Ted Daros and his series winning Nova in the trailer with engine issues. Also out was John Suess and his freshly built and beautiful 1969 Hurst Olds with rear axel issues and Last years #5 finisher Bill DiCicco when his 1968 383 Road Runner bent a couple valves.

On the track in qualifying we find Ralph Barbagallo in the top spot putting an 11.44 on the board. Yesterday's winner Billy Atwood came in just behind in the 2 spot. Tom Tarzwell lead the small blocks in third followed by Rhett Moody, Kevin Davey and Steve Tate in 6th.

Round two is where Toms weekend ended when Ralph and his 6BBL 71 GTX proved to much for his small block. Rhett was also ready to load up his Barracuda after Billy passed him at mid track and took the win.

In the finals Billy wouldn't be passing anyone as Ralph left first and pulled away to take the race win.

On the consolation ladder Steve got to the finals by beating Don and his Nova to face Hal in his evergreen Bel Aire. Steve gave Hal a head start at the light but shifted through the gears right passed him to a consolation win.

SUPERCAR SHOOTOUT. 2016
ROUND 4

The beginning of May brings the SuperCar Shootout to Island Dragway in New Jersey. A throwback to the classic days of drag racing and a place these cars would've looked just the same nearly 50 years ago.

Ralph Barbagallo, on a very tricky track, grabbed the top qualifiers honor running an 11.67 in his GTX. Billy Atwood less than a tenth behind took second. Ted Daros made a strong showing putting his 1968 Nova into third. Rhett Moody slotted into the forth spot, and Dom D'Alonzo in his small block, 4 speed Impala grabbed an impressive 5th spot.

At this point weather played its first role of the season and sent the series packing to finish the race at the next scheduled event at Lebanon Valley Dragway.

The first round saw Billy Atwood take down a slowing Tom Tarzwell, and Rhett Moody dispatching of Dom D'Alonzo. Rhett found his day ending in the second round as number one qualifier Ralph Barbagallo's GTX was too much for his Baracuda. Billy's own GTX proved to be more than a match for Ted's 68 setting up another all GTX final round.

This day and the points would belong to Billy Atwood and his 1970 GTX.

In the lower ladder Tom Tarzwell got by Dom in their final to grab the remainder of available points. This is the part of the season where we start to see the four way battle that is going to run to the final race, and the final round.

1. Billy Atwood. 111
2. Ralph Barbagallo. 109
3. Tom Tarzwell. 106
3. Rhett moody. 106
5. Don Wilkins. 78

After the summer hiatus the SuperCar Shootout comes to their home track of Raceway Park at Englishtown New Jersey. Running in conjunction with the Mopars at Englishtown show the SuperCar Shootout brought out 20 racers from five different manufacturers to run the 1320 for the crowds.

Qualifying went back and forth but after the final runs the Mopars fans were cheering as Billy Atwoods GTX grabbed the top spot over Fast Freddy Rodriguez in his brutal SS396 Nova. Ralph Barbagallo got pushed down to the third spot in his own quick GTX. Tom Tarzwell and Ted Daros rounded out the top five in their Duster 340 and Nova 396 respectively. Qualifying time ran from 11.61 to 14.57 so everyone had competitive rounds of competition.

In the first round of quickest eight eliminations Billy Atwood dropped Ted Daros into the consolation rounds. Freddy used his Nova to power past the holeshotting Rhett Moody to put himself into the second round. Ralph roared past Philip Roitman in his quicker than should be 1973 Buick GS Stage One. Tom Tarzwell also punched his ticked by getting passed the returning John Suess in his immaculate 1969 Hurst Olds.

In the second round of the quickest of the quick Ralph put a hurting on points leader Billy Atwood, and Freddy disposed of Tom's Duster setting up a number two vs three final round.

In the final round Ralph got a jump on Freddy and never looked back as he ran an 11.8 to Freddy's 11.9 to take the big trophy.

In the quickest eight consolation rounds competition was no less fierce. Ted Daros and his Nova put a hurting on Phil's GS, and Rhett Moody downed John Suess and the big bad H/O.
But in the final it was a Chevy with the win when Ted outran Rhett to get the points.

in the quick eight rounds of racing we find Buck Wing in his 1965 Coronet defeating John Tambascio in his gorgeous 1970 440 4 speed 'Cuda. Steve Casola used his 4 speed 1968 GTX to thrill the crowd by beating Dom DAlonzo's Chevy. Steve Tate drove away from the 1972 Chevelle of Mike Derasmo and John Slavins 1969 SS396 Camaro sped by the small block of Hal Oaks.

John would bring his Camaro to the finals to meet the Plymouth of Steve's. The GTX would be quicker, but John would get the win on a holeshotting to win the quick eight finals.
The quick eight conciliation finals saw the Chevy of Hal Oaks defeating the Chevy of Dom DAlanzo.
The match races had Bill DiCicco's 383 Road Runner get by both the 68 Super Bee of Fred Meyer and the 440 GTX of Chris Mouritzen.

1. Billy. Atwood 137
1. Ralph Barbagallo 137
3. Tom Tarzwell. 133
4. Rhett Moody. 132
5. Steve Tate. 86

SUPERCAR SHOOTOUT 2016
Round 6

For the sixth round of the SuperCar Shootout the racers again find themselves trekking to Raceway Park at Englishtown New Jersey. And for the second race in a row there were a large number of entries to get sorted so it must be time for qualifying.

For the second race in a row qualifying went back and forth but in the end it was again Bill Atwood sitting atop the list having put up an 11.52 just nipping the 396 Nova of Freddy Rodriguez. Ralph Barbagallo qualified his bad green GTX in third followed by the small block Duster of Tom Tarzwell and the big block nova of last years champion Ted Daros.

Round one started by Billy Atwood getting passed the former champ and Freddy dropping Rhett's Plymouth. Ralph stopped the big H/O of John Seuss, and Tom beat John Slavin and his big block 1969 Camaro.

Round two found the familiar pairing of Billy Atwood and Ralph Barbagallo with the pass to the final round going to Billy's 1970 6Bbl GTX. Getting to the finals to meet Mr Atwood would again be Freddy Rodriguez as he used his Chevy to eliminate Tom's Plymouth.

In the finals it was Billy Atwoods GTX that would run the quicker time, but Freddy's Nova would reach the stripe first by getting the leave at the lights.

In the first of the conciliation rounds Ted Daros in his 1968 Nova drove passed John Seuss' Hurst Olds and Rhett Moody dispatched John Slavins big block Camaro. The finals weren't as kind to the Baracuda of Rhett's as Ted took the win in his Nova.

In the match races Buck wing and his 65 Dodge took the win over Steve Tate's AAR, Hal Oaks took the win over Bill DiCicco and Jack Anderson with his Tri-Power 4 speed Pontiac 2+2 got the better of Fred Meyers and his 1968 Super Bee.

1. Billy Atwood. 164
2. Ralph Barbagallo. 162
3. Tom Tarzwell. 160
4. Rhett Moody. 158
5. Steve Tate. 98

SUPERCAR SHOOTOUT
ROUND NINE

RAINED OUT

Now with most racing series that would be the end of the update, but not with the SuperCar Shootout. The SuperCar racers looked at the weather pattern, looked at the maps, made some phone calls and like magic there was a full field of racers in the pits of Lebanon Valley Dragway. This isn't a points race but it shows the type of racers that the SuperCar Shootout has in their ranks.

In qualifying it was the 1969 Nova of Ted Daros that would lead, putting an 11.29 on the board. The GTX 's of Billy Atwood and Ralph Barbagallo would drop into the two and three spots. While the 340's or Rhett Moody and Steve Tate would fill the top 5.

The first race of eliminations saw Ted's Nova dispatch of Steves AAR Cuda. Billy Atwood similarly dropped Tom Tarzwells 73 Duster. Ralph Barbagallo used his 6Bbl to defeat Bill DiCicco's 383 Road Runner and Rhett took out Tim Fredricks and his 1974 360 powered Dart.

In the second round Ralph got by the killer Nova of Mr Daros and Billy Atwood continued to accumulate wins by driving passed Rhett's Formula S.

In the closest race of the day, Ralph sneaked by Billy running an 11.54 to Billy's 11.59 to take the win.

In the consolation rounds Bill DiCicco managed to get the win over Steve Tate's 6Bbl small block and Tom Tarzwell got by Tim Fredricks in a ballet of A-Bodies.

In the finals it was Tom's duster getting the win over Bill's 1968 Beep Beep.

All this for fun and a chance to hang out with the best racers around. No points, just racing.

SUPERCAR SHOOTOUT
ROUND TEN

The third week of October brings the SuperCar Shootout to Lebanon Valley Dragway for the SuperCar Nationals. An all day musclecar fest of both racing and showing. Some of the nicest cars on the east coast make the yearly trek to The Valley to attend this show.

But our interest here in on the track and that's where we see Ted Daros sitting atop the qualifying order running an 11.26. Billy Atwood put his 440 6 Bbl into second just ahead or Ralph's simerlerly powered Plymouth. Tom Tarzwell and Rhett Moody put their 340's forth and fifth.

First out of the gate, Ted Daros dropped Rhett Moody's small block. Bill Atwood also got a win taking down the returning 1967 327 Chevy II of Hal Oaks. Steve Tate upset Ralph Barbagallo with a holeshot to get to round two. In the last of the first round match ups Mark Bowman used his SS396 69 Chevelle to take out a slowing Tom Tarzwell.

Round two started with Steve Tate's AAR again getting a lead at the light and holding on against a quicker Ted Daros. Bill Atwood then ended the racing for Marks Bowman for the day

In the finals Steve Tate pulled a hat trick and for a third consecutive round took out a heavy hitter with a holeshot to get the round win and the race win over Billy Atwood's GTX.

In the lower ladder, Rhett Moody got by Ralph Barbagallo and Tom Tarzwell eliminated Hal Oaks to set up an all 340 final round
On the track, Tom's Duster had just too much for the Baracuda of Moody's and took the consolation trophy.

In the match races, Kevin Davey's Vanishing Point Challenger defeated Brad Back in a 1971 Buick GS455. Bill DiCicco in his 1968 383 Road Runner beat Sal Aparo in his 06 Mustang GT. Jacob Marquis made his first SuperCar race and got his first win in his 1968 Firebird 400 convertible over Rhett True and his 1965 GS340 convertible. Mark Levantano got a bye run with his 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

SUPERCAR SHOOTOUT

ROUND ELEVEN

As November rolls around the racing gets even more serious. Lower E.T.s, higher car counts, and somehow even more trash talking! The last three weeks of te season brings out the best from the whole group of racers. Everyone trying to get more points than the racer ahead of them, especially true since that person is almost always a friend.

However the talk doesn't come onto the track, it's all car and driver, and the car and driver that brought the biggest hammer today was Ted Daros and his 1969 396 Nova. Ted used his big block to run a 10.89 for the top qualifier spot. Points leader Billy Atwood placed second just missing a 10 second run himself. Greg Whitney brought out his 66 Chevelle and put it in the three hole. Ralph Barbagallo and Tom Tarzwell put their plymouths in the forth and fifth qualifying spots.

In round one, Ted stayed in the 10's and put a beating on Tom Tarzwells Duster. Bill Atwood finished a second ahead of Rhett Moody and Greg Whitney nearly ran a ten second E.T. Putting the Chevy II of Hal Oaks into the conlolation race. To finish the quickest right first round, Ralph Barbagallo got a bit of revenge on Steve Tate in his quick 4 speed 'Cuda.

Round two found a Chevy on Chevy battle and a pair of Plymouths going at it. Greg Whitney had the unenviable job of racing former SuperCar champ Ted Daros. But fate was on gregs side as Teds Nova slowed and needed a tow back to his pit. Billy Atwood knows that he needed to take advantage of Teds quick Nova being out to gather points but first he has to get a win verse Ralph Barbagallo and his always tough 71 GTX. In a close finish the 1970 GTX got there first setting up a final between him and the 1966 396 of Greg's.

Billy's tuning expertise was on full display as he put an 11.29 on the board with his 6 Bbl Plymouth, but Gregs driving combined with an 11.33 of his own gave the Chevrolet the win and denying Billy much needed points.

In the consolation rounds Tom Tarzwell sneaked by an ever quickening Hal Oaks and his Chevy II, known as The Toy. Rhett Moody continued his points chase by beating rival Steve Tate in a battle of 12 second Plymouths.

But in the final Rhett would meet up with an eleven second car, the Duster of Tom Tarzwell, and Rhett would watch the Dusters tail lights crossing the finish line.

The quick eight first round put the SS396 Camaro of John Slavin against the surprisingly quick Pontiac Bonneville of John Sweeney. Though the 428 gave a good run, the Camaro would get the win. Next to the line was Bill DiCicco and his 383 1968 Road Runner to face the GS455 Buick of Anthony Vassallo with the Plymouth getting to the second round. The small block 4 speed Impala of Dom D'Alonzo pulled up to the lights next to do battle with the 400 powered Oldsmobile Cutlass S of Dave Mazochi. The Chevy got the win and a pass to round two. Then in what must've been one of the largest drag races of all time, Jack Anderson pulled his 1966 Tri-power 4 speed 2+2 up against the equally huge 389 Bonneville of John Sweeney. At the big end it was Jack Anderson getting the win.

In round two John Slavin ended Bill DiCicco s day and Dom D'Alonzo won the war of 4 speeds against Jack Anderson setting up an all Chevrolet final.

In a close battle Johns Camaro squeaked out a win over Dom's Impala.

In the quick eight consolation John Sweeney drove away from the 1972 GS of Anthony Vassallo and Dave's Cutlass got by the 389 Bonniville of Jon Sandeen.
After the finals it was John Sweeney standing tall and collecting the hardware.

SUPERCAR SHOOTOUT

ROUND TWELVE

Raceway Park, maybe better known as Englishtown is the next stop on the world tour that is the SuperCar Shootout. Five cars will qualify with times under twelve seconds and the whole field will come in in under fourteen seconds, yes things are heating up as the air turns cold.

Taking the most advantage of the good air was once again Ted Daros in his 10 second Nova putting a 10.90 on the score sheet. Not far behind with an 11.05 was Billy Atwood in his points leading GTX. Greg Whitney grabbed the third spot in his Chevelle from forth place starter Ralph Barbagallo. Tom Tarzwell filled the fifth place running an 11.77 with his 340 Duster.

First out of the gate, Ted Daros sent Tom Tarzwell to do battle in the consolation rounds. The GTX of Billy Atwood also punched his ticket to the second round by taking down Rhett Moody's Fish. Greg Whitney used his bright blue Chevy to get passed the ailing Chevy II of Hal Oaks. In the final race of the first round Ralph Barbagallo used his GTX as a blunt instrument to pound the AAR of Steve Tate.

In round two Greg Whitney again got by the juggernaut Nova of Ted Daros, only this time Ted didn't break. Greg put an 11.07 on the scoreboard to get the round win. Ralph Barbagallo, not to be outdone put an 11.35 up on his way by Billy Atwood setting up Greg's Chevelle vs Ralph's GTX on the final. Both cars slowed slightly in the finals, but Greg had more to give and was able to maintain a lead to the end of the track taking his second win in succession.

In the consolation rounds Tom Tarzwell took the win over Hal Oaks and Rhett moody just got passed a quickly closing Steve Tate. The finals found the Duster of Tom Tarzwell just getting by the Formula S of Moody's to get the trophy and the points.

SUPERCAR SHOOTOUT

ROUND THIRTEEN

We arrive at Raceway Park with the top five racers separated by just four points. Every round can be a make or break round for any of these racers. Tom Tarzwell and his 340 Duster comes here tied for the lead with the driver who has had the lead for most of the year, Billy Atwood, piloting his 1970 6Bbl GTX. Three points behind the leaders are the Plymouths of Rhett Moody and Steve Tate. And just a single point back of then the 1971 GTX of Ralph Barbagallo. Add to the points drama the super quick Chevys of Ted Daros and Greg Whitney running through the field playing spoilers and you have as much drama and tension as you could want in a race series.

Qualifying put the two Chevrolet s of Ted Daros and Greg Whitney one, two. With Bill Atwood in the third spot trying to get alone in the points lead again. Ralph Barbagallo qualified forth and filled as a buffer from fifth spotted and points lead tying Tom Tarzwell.

Eliminations started with Ted Daros putting Tom's Duster into the consolation rounds. Greg Whitney also won his way to round two by beating on the Chevy II of Hal Oaks. Bill Atwood grabbed much needed points by taking down Rhett Moody and his 340 and Steve Tate kept his championship hopes alive by upsetting Ralph Barbagallo to get into the second round.

In the second round Billy's points chase took a hit when he couldn't beat Ted's Nova. Limiting the points hit was Steve Tate's AAR not being able to handle the Chevrolet of Greg Whitney.

The final round had Ted putting his Nova ahead of the Chevelle of Gregs to get the win.

Points are points, whether the are won in the main race or accumulated in the consolation race, and there's no shortage of pressure here to stay alive in the championship with three of the top five in points going head to head. In a big upset Rhett Moody took down Tom's Duster not to be outdone in the upset department, Hal Oaks took out Ralph Barbagallo to put himself in the finals against the Baracuda of Moody's. All the pressure is on Moody to stay alive in the championship. All the cards have fallen his way, Bill lost, Ralph lost, Tom lost and Steve lost. However Hal would give no quarter and put a possible stake in Rhett's championship hopes taking the win.

POINTS
1. Billy Atwood 243
2. Tom Tarzwell 242
3. Steve Tate 240
4. Rhett Moody 239

SUPERCAR SHOOTOUT

ROUND FOURTEEN

Atco New Jersey. This is where the SuperCar Shootout will crown its 2016 champion. We've gone through thirteen races, thirty nine rounds of compitition, nearly fifty racers at six of the finest tracks in the country and still there are three viable contenders the the throne. First, Billy Atwood come in needing just two round wins to secure his championship. Tom Tarzwell needs to do him one better and get three round wins to own the crown. And Steve Tate needs 2 quick eight rounds to get by the top two points leaders. But before any of that racing begins we need to qualify.

Once again it's Ted Daros sitting atop the qualifying order with a 10.86 coming from his drag green Nova. Greg Whitney s 396 Chevelle makes it a one two sor Chevrolet in qualifying. Billy Atwood and his 6Bbl GTX gets the third spot followed by Ralph Barbagallo s GTX and Tom Tarzwell s Duster. Steve Tate qualified down in the 8 spot just keeping his championship hopes alive.

In round one Tom Tarzwell comes to the line knowing he needs a win to guarantee he stays alive in the championship but to do that he'd need to defeat defending champ Ted Daros. Ted however put a knife in that plan by taking the round win. Greg Whitney continued his winning ways by beating Hal's stout Chevy II. Billy Atwood in round comes to the line to face Rhett Moody and his quick fish. At the lights its Billy who's needs a victory to keeping is championship alive. Steve Tate needing to win two rounds in the quick eight got his first by beating Ralph Barbagallo.

Round two finds Billy Atwood with a chance to clinch the championship. All he has to do is to defeat Ted Daros and his 10 second running Nova. But the nova would not be denied a win and put Billy on the sidelines to see if his points lead would hold. Next up is Steve Tate with a chance to take the series points lead away from Billy with a win over Greg Whitneys 396 powered machine. But again a Chevy took that hope away. Beating Steve and leaving just Billy and Tom alive for the championship.

In the finals Ted took the win over Greg to finish the season on a high note.

The consolation rounds now finds all the drama. Tom Tarzwell needs a win over Rhett Moody just for a chance of battling for the title Tom does what he needs to and gets by Rhett and makes it to the consolation finals. Ralph Barbagallo will be meeting him there after getting by The Toy of Hal Oaks.

All season has come down to this one last round. If Tom gets the win over Ralph he becomes the 2016 champion. If not Billy Atwood's lead will hold and he will become champion. The lights come down... Eleven second Duster vs eleven second GTX. Former champ vs former champ. Just 11.63 seconds later a 1971 GTX crossed the finish line getting the win and giving the championship to Billy Atwood.

There could be no better champion than Mr Atwood. He's alway the first person to show up with help when any competitor is having problems. The first person to crawl under a broken race car. The first person to offer parts, bolts, advice to anyone who needs or wants it. Billy was a champion long before he won the SuperCar Shootout. Congrats to Billy Atwood a most deserving 2016 SuperCar Shootout Champion!!!!
