Go Fast, Turn Left!
2008 Chryslers @ Carlisle went into the record books as being the biggest and best ever, with thousands of Mopars bathing in the hot Pennsylvania sun for four days. The 2008 Chryslers @ Carlisle event was the first ever Mopar SuperCar ShootOut event featured at Carlisle. This was the second event in the race series. This SuperCar ShootOut event featured over one dozen Mopar Musclecars that appeared 100% Factory Correct but have internal driveline modifications that could not be seen by any Mopar enthusiast that found themselves looking over any one of the powerful beasts that waited for their time on the Quarter Aces Dragstrip. On Friday night, when these racecars disguised as showcars made their way to Quarter Aces Dragway, their secrets were revealed. Running 1/8 mile ET's in the sub seven second range Announcer Mike would do the calculations and would tell the crowd, "WOW! that would of be an 11.30 pass on the 1/4 mile!". After the second qualifier was in the books, many knew these were not your average Mopar show poodles.

With the Field set and 10 of the dozen SuperCar SuperStars gunning for a spot in the quick eight field, the running order was set. The story started as it had ended after the first Mopar Supercar ShootOut at the Mopars @ E-Town Event in Englishtown NJ. During qualifying, Big Ed Cook with a Quick E/T of 7.54, sealed the number one spot. A surprise to some, but not to many, the number two and three spots were filled with 340 Mills. The first, owned by Gene Wilsey and driven by Gene's son, Brian and the other owned by Chris Kuskowski. Number four qualifying position was taken by Ralph Barbagallo.

Round One
The field was set, Number One Ed Cook and his SuperCar ShootOut's Fastest Big Block A12 RoadRunner against Number Eight Harry Chargrois in his 1969 383 4 BBL Super Bee. After the two staged, the lights came down. Harry jumped The Big Red Bee out of the gate first. The Bee was hauling the honey to the top end when the three barrels made it known they would be advancing to the next round, as Ed's Black A12 claimed the stripe at the end of Quarter Aces Eighth mile.

The next pair that came to the line was SuperCar ShootOut's Fastest Small Block, owned by Gene Wilsey and piloted by his son Brian, up against the coolest bird in the nest, Scott McKenzie and his Fat A12. The two of them fired up their mills and made their way to the staging lanes. Brian, with lane choice, chose the left. They prestaged then staged. The nickel pro tree came down, and in an instant the Yellow AAR went up in smoke. Brian, without panic, let off and hit it again. To his surprise, the AAR hooked and was now it's way down the eighth mile. With Scott lengths ahead, Brian had no chance as the stripe came way too quick.

Number three Qualifier Chris Kuskowski was paired against the one and only Greg McNichol and his stout 1969 Coronet R/T. Greg's R/T was the Fastest 440-4v Big Block in the pack, not to mention a crowd-pleaser at every event the SuperCar ShootOut has run. You see, Greg is the SuperCar ShootOut Smoke Show King. After lane choice was made by Chris, the two shook hands and made their way to the Quarter Aces newly refinished starting line that was seasoned once again after the track officials saw the issues Brian and his AAR had. When the Quarter Aces official prepped their respected lanes with their own mix of Sticky Voo Doo Juice applied to the first 300 ft., both racers knew they would be running their best times of the day, and only the fastest of the two would make it to the Semi Finals. After what seemed to be a 5 minute or so burnout by Greg, they staged their shiny red Mopars and waited for the starter to set the beams in motion. After a quick jump by Greg, Chris turned up the power and found himself sending Greg to the Consolation Race.

The Final two made their way to the starting line. James Cook and Ralph Barbagallo were two pilots with their own agendas at hand. James, looking to be the fastest 4 Spd car in the Class, and Ralph, looking to be the fastest 6BBL in the class, were ready to do battle. Both staged and did moderate burnouts knowing that their best recorded E/Ts at previous ShootOuts were done in this matter. They both prestaged, then staged and the tree fell. With a light peddle coming out of both lanes, they left with a slight hesitation and then both, within an instant, opened all 12 BBLs and in a hurry made their way to the stripe. With only feet to spare Ralph sent James to the Consolation Race.

Semi Finals
The Semi Finals made for a great battle of the titans. First up, the rematch of the final round that never happened in New Jersey was now going down on the eighth mile. The second pairing pitted Big block against Chrysler's most powerful Small block.

The First Pair made it to the line. Lane choice was discussed in the pits and Ed took the right, Ralph took the left. Ed Cook and his Sinister A12 boiled the tires. Ralph did a John Force Funny Car burnout to the 300 ft mark out of the groove. They both prestaged then staged. The beams went off. Ed pulled the Sinister A12's fender to the front. Ralph launched hard. At half track Ralph caught Ed on the one two shift. Once the 70 Runner hit high gear it was over in a instant. Ralph's Runner won by only one one thousand of a second and sealed up the top honors as quickest big block of the day.

With half of the final round decided, the next pair made their way to the line. Chris and his Duster, ready to dust Scott back to the Fair Grounds, was armed for battle. Scott and his Fat A12 picked the left lane. Chris was in the right lane, with all his guns blasting. They both left hard, putting all the power to the track. The left lane gripped with all it might, but Chris in the right had no chance, as the grip had gone away and the tire smoke found its way into the wheel wells of the Duster, as Scott throttled the Fat A12 through the gears to a big end win.

Consolation Semi Finals
In the Consolation race, James took the win over Harry, rowing his Scorch Red four speed A12 like no other, to a perfect pass and a round win. Following that match, Brian Wilsey, piloting Gene's AAR, took the round win over Greg McNichol's tire boiling R/T. Both James and Brian were ready to take their prized Mopars into the Finals. With the Finals set in both the Consolation Race and the Top Eliminator battle, the track was prepped and over the loud speaker you heard the call- "SuperCars to the lanes, SuperCar ShootOut to the lanes!".

Finals
Once the call was made, the racers heart beats raised. The Racers chose their lanes, helmets were buckled and the stage was set. The first pair into the finals made their way to the burnout box. James applied the line lock, looked over and nodded to Brian. They both laid down a patch of rubber to the staging beams. Both cleaned out the twelve barrels and made their way to the beams. James rolled in as Brian torqued up the AAR. Brian knew he had the power to take out James, if the AAR could put the power down the eight mile. James knew he had the power and hoped the 6BBls in his RoadRunner could do the job. Both left hard but cautious, they didn't boil the tires. within a blink, they made their way down the Quarter Aces track, and with only inches to spare, Brian took the AAR to the winner's circle for a well deserved Victory celebration.

With the Consolation Race completed, this only left the Big Guns to do battle on this now cool evening in the hills on Pennsylvania. Like other battles the nearby hills of Gettysburg have seen, this would be the one that decided who would be the "SuperCar Chrysler @ Carlisle ShootOut Top Eliminator". Both racers felt confident they would be able to take home the Top Eliminator Award. They made their way to the burnout box they and both laid down rubber to get their polyglasses to the right temperature. Once they completed the burnout, they both prestaged then staged. Ralph in the left lane and Scott in the right, and only five bulbs and an eighth mile to decide the whole event. In under 8 seconds it would all be over. The lights went green, Scott, with an almost perfect reaction, jumped out front. With his right foot almost through the floor board, he gave the Rallye Green Bird all he had. In the left lane the Ralph's Runner came to life. The polyglasses did all they could do but couldn't take the power they were being delivered. Knowing this, Ralph back pedaled into a second gear shift, then found enough grip to take the checkered flag on the big end.
Like many of the soldiers that have battled in these hills, Only a few can be known as the Top Eliminators. Both Brian Wilsey in the Lemon Twist AAR and Ralph Barbagallo in his Root Beer Brown Runner headed back to the fair grounds with awards that they had earned in a battle that was fierce but fun to witness.

Actually, the right lane gripped great too. On that pass I ran as good as I did all day and while I think I dented the floor pan under the pedal Scott got me by a fender. It was a beautiful race.
