"Ice Breaker III" April 4, 2009 Raceway Park Englishtown, NJ

The third running of the Ice Breaker Race proved to be more of a Wind Breaker than an ice breaker event. The weather that was forecasted on April 4th, 2009, was ideal for factory appearing musclecar racing. Cool, partly cloudy, with slight winds from the northeast. When we arrived at raceway park, we were met with a partly cloudy skies, as forecasted, and wind. Not a tail wind, but a brisk 50 MPH cross wind. This proved to be a prescription for unsafe racing. Once we consulted the track officials, the call was made to race 1/8 mile not 1/4.

As the morning rolled along, the contenders started making their way into Raceway Park. The field started to take shape, with all brands being represented. The heavy hitters found their way to E-Town and were ready to kick off the 2009 SuperCar ShootOut Season.

Qualifying for the Ice Breaker III found familiar names at the top of the order. The Cook Racing Team out of Sparkill, NY took the two pole positions, followed by a couple of new combos to the 2009 season. One of those cemented himself into the 3rd qualifying position, Chris Kuskowski out of Ansonia, CT. Chris brought along his well known Duster with a new mill under the bright red paint, a build that was documented on the SuperCar Forum.

Another new build for 2009 was brought out by Ted Daros. Ted had been hard at work this past winter, researching and collecting the correct parts needed to duplicate one of only 18 1970 Chevelle SS 396 L89 optioned Chevelles to leave the mother ship before Chevrolet put a stop to producing anymore aluminum headed factory musclecars.

After three rounds of qualifying, the quick eight field was set, as well as the match races. Two newcomers to the series introduced themselves and their truly spectacular rides. Dominick D'Alonzo, with a 1963 Chevrolet 327 Impala, was ready to run his new combo in a musclecar that was very familiar to him. You see, Dominick has known this car his whole life. Dominick's dad bought the 1963 Impala new. Dominick took over the reins in 1982, and has raced the Impala throughout the years, and in 2009 has decided to join the SuperCar ShootOut Racing Series.

Another long time owner of one of Detroit's icons is Tom Tarzwell. Tom has joined the SuperCar ShootOut this year after taking the past couple of years getting his idolized 1969 Hemi Charger R/T fully restored by NorthEast Auto Restoration out of Cranston, RI. Dan at NorthEast went through the original Hemi Powered 4 Speed Charger and completely restored every inch of the Charger R/T. Tom, a long time drag racer with many years of experience behind the wheel of many race cars, has decided to join the fun in SuperCar Series. With enough Larry Shepard Hemi Power to set the Charger on Kill mode, Tom is ready to go.

After two rounds of competition, the field started to take on a familiar look. Ed Cook in the final, John Suess taking a round away from Billy Atwood, Scott McKenzie ready to do what he has done in many SuperCar Series events, become the spoiler with his killer reaction times and dead on E/T's, Chris Kuskowski was poised and ready to become the spoiler in the quick eight final.

After the smoke settled, Ed Cook found himself in the winner circle along with Scott McKenzie, Billy Atwood, Dan Korb and Tom Tarzwell. What started out as a windy day turned out to be another great ending to yet another chapter in the SuperCar Racing Series.
