Imagine your wife and kids on the starting line watching something like this happen.

I seem to catch a lot of crap for pointing this stuff out? I don't get it. :shrug

SAFETY FIRST!

I think the point he is trying to make is making sure the car is safe enough to race in the first place, ie: no leaks, brakes work, tires HAVE TREAD, or proper slicks that aren't worn out, cage if necessary. I think our group is smart enough to know what is and is not safe. Safety is paramount at any level. even a 15 sec. car can break and hit the wall and roll. doing 80mph and fluid on the rear tires to fishtail and go across the lanes into the wall would still hurt. I get his point.

I as the promoter of the SuperCar ShootOut I am doing everything possible to make sure that if this happens in our series that both of my racers would walk away as did the racers in the video. I as do most here at the SuperCar ShootOut welcome Andrews view points on safety. If Andrew or anyone felt the need to call any of the tracks we attend and comment on how to make our series run safer I would have no problem with that.

Racing on polyglas tires* is as safe as racing on slicks. I personally feel safer on Poly than slicks because of the sidewall and tread on the tires. I was unfortunate to be part of two wrecks on polyglas tires. My Road Runner just before I purchased it, lost it’s driveshaft on top end and went across the track and spin out violantly enough to pull the treads of the edge of the tire. Also I raced at LVD one year and another racer lost control of his car came into my lane missing me and my Road Runner by only inches. I personally feel that with our tire rule and safety requirements that our tracks mandate that we run a safe series to participate in.

*14.06 Tire Tech; All the repop tire treads are similar in design, 4-6 deep circular tread grooves with smaller grooves and sipes within those rows. There must be evidence of the original main tread grooves over the whole tire to be legal. Any bald sections or patches where the original main groove disappears and the tire must be replaced. Most important if your tires are questionable, make sure you bring an extra set to qualify and compete with. Tires will be inspected before during and after the event is completed and must have all of the main treads showing.

Both of those cars are capable of 7 second ETs at 165+mph. However on their unfortunate run both cars lost traction before the 1/8th mile and were fighting to control the cars. The car that didn't hit the wall was out of control and coming into the other guy's lane anyway. Cars such as those would run between 120/130 mph in the 1/8. A speed which is typical at a SUPERCAR event. So this is very real and a very good example of what could happen. Rarely do you have a camera over the finish line to see and hear what happens. They walked away because they had ALL the SAFETY equipment.

Andrew great post! :bow Can you give us a recommendation of safety equipment needed for E/T's. A new guy/gal looking to join running in the 14’s what should he/she bring or check to keep him/her safe? The guy/gal building an all out record holder, what will he/she need?

Looks like both racers were having a hell of a time trying to keep a leash on those cars long before they lost it. I know its racing but "knowing when to say when" can preclude any need for safety equipment in the first place.
