Hello everyone, I'm trying to pick a quality reliable set of plugs. With so many to choose from it's tough. Plugs have such an important job that I wanna make sure I pick the right set???

this is my motor set up:
-440 sixpack with a 4 speed
-pump gas, 9.5:1 compression
-stock stroke
-cast iron heads with no porting
-stock replacement cam
-stock set of carbs
-elec. ignition (no points)
-and I think that's it vern.

As of now,I gues I'll go with the standard champion plugs...and maybe a set of firecore wires.

I always had good luck running a standard copper core autolite plug. No fancy metals or electrode shapes. Gapped to .035 as per the factory electronic ignition allowed. I never bothered with anything more than a run of the mill mopar chrome box.

Just make sure the factory parts are healthy.

I have had good luck with Firecores if not for mph increase as soon as I went to them, then for the much better construction of the terminals. I ripped too many wires out of the plug boots when shrouded by iron manifolds.

Mr Easy, In your stock - street - strip motor "Standard" Autolites or NGK plugs are the way to go. Autolite 85 is what I use in my stock Big Block cars. Firecores work real good. Make sure to get your SuperCars discount from Rick.

Chris, thanks a bunch for sharing and the head's up. I went through my stash of how to articles and I wasn't able to find too many articles on how to pick the right plug but I was able to find a lot on plug wires and plug wire routing, so the info you shared is very helpful! Once I replace the plugs, I'll take your advice and take a look at my other ignition parts for max efficiency.

THANKS!

Senor Ralph, thank you for the help of narrowing down the type of spark plug down for me and for sharing what has worked for you in the past; it's much appreciated. I was at my local parts store the other day trying to pick a good plug for my car and the guy at the counter showed me about 2-3 variations of autolite plugs, when I asked what the difference was he just gave me a deer in the headlight's look... :shrug it's so frustrating that the guys at my local parts store don't know anything about the parts they're selling.

take care, Juan.

I replaced the champion spark plugs on my 69 6pak bee with autolite 85 platinum plugs this weekend and the bee did not like them! I noticed a hesitation right when I started it up and every time after that. The biggest thing I noticed is that I could smell the fuel from the back of my car, in fact, it stunk up my house real bad (the drive way sits right in front of the house and I have an attached garage). Also, I noticed that when I turned the car off, it would shake a bit, some people call it "dieseling."

So, I'm going back with the champion plugs that were on there before. I just thought I'd share my experience. I also included a picture of the 2 plugs for comparison.

Juan

Sounds like you have a cracked plug or two. I also heard that they just started making Autolites in China. May be a sign to go to NGK's in the street cars. Juan check the plug ceramic area. Also what ignition are you running. FYI I put a set in the 71 RR I ran this past weekend, I had no issues.

Hey Ralph, I have the elec. ignition box with the orange street box. I'm gonna go back to the plugs I had before as they seem to work fine, but I'll check the new plugs for cracks when I remove them. What type of ignition do you have on your RR?

I found that on a street strip 6BBL car the best ignition box is an MSD. I run an MSD box on all five of my 6BBL street strip cars. Now for race, The Chrysler Chrome box with an Orange box as a stand by :aok . I tried the MSD on the race cars :bang , they just don't work as well as the Chrylser chrome box. Sounds weird but this is what works for me.

Cool beans, thanks for sharing. I put a new set of Y12 champion plugs back in and it seems to be working fine so I'm gonna run with it.

So, if I understand the rules correctly, I have to keep the orange ignition box out of sight from the engine compartment b/c my car came with points, therefore, if I run anything other than points then I have to keep it out of eye's view, right???

Correct, hide it under the battery tray or under the dash.
