Post subject:  New Build for fun - '68 Plymouth Sport Fury
I thought I would share some of my plans. I have been toying with the idea of building a street/strip car for a few years and talked with Ralph about the SuperCar series several times over a period of a year and a half.

Last October, I took my green "survivor" '68 Sport Fury with a 383 and highway gears up to the Lebanon Valley event for fun and to meet some of the people who race in this series. Everyone that I met made me feel welcome, I had fun and I plan on trying to make some events this year.

I collect (primarily) 1968 and 1971 Plymouth Furys. I keep my wife happy by telling people I have more cars than brains and my Furys are my only big addiction. One of my cars is a yellow '68 Plymouth Sport Fury 2 door hardtop that I have owned since the early '90's and had restored in the late '90's. This is a low mileage car with only 51,000 miles but the original 318 powerplant just wasn't keeping my right foot happy anymore so I decided this car will be my SuperCar build car. The 318 drivetrain got yanked last weekend and the initial plan is to replace the 318 with a low mileage 383 that I have and to upgrade the highway geared rearend to something more appropriate for moving the car down the quarter mile at a reasonable pace.

The engine compartment needs to attention and my paint and body guy thinks that he can get to my car in May. :shrug

A disc brake conversion needs to be installed on the car and the engine and transmission will need a little bit of TLC from sitting before they are dropped in. With some luck, the car will be together before the end of the racing season. I have been underemployed since December of 2008, so I am trying to do what needs to be done on a tight budget. Down the road, I hope to build another engine for this car, when finances permit me to do so.

For those who are wondering why build a '68 Sport Fury, the answer is that I already have the car, I like to be different and the car does not weigh as much as most people would think.

Factory literature lists the dry weight with a 318 & automatic at just over 3,800 lbs. I have never weighed the car but have seen some weights on another forum that lead me to expect that with a 383, it will weigh less than a '71 Road Runner and probably about the same as a '70 GTX or '70 Coronet.

Unklike the full-size GM an Ford products, starting in '65, the full-size MOPARS were semi-unibody construction. They used a bolt-on front stub frame and the rest of the car was unibody construction.

When this '68 Plymouth Fury II sedan gets put back together it may make a few SuperCar appearances for fun (it is being restored with an undercover police car theme) and I hope that next year, my 71 Plymouth Fury Custom Suburban wagon will make an appearance as well just for fun.

I can't wait to see your collection on the 1320 :drive . The Fury will be killer and unsuspecting :pop . How are you making out with the 383, is it ready to go? What gear are you planning to run? Post more pic's when you have a chance.

be careful, i started doing this "just for fun" also :lol:

i like the wagon, my buddy's family had one....a 440 4 bbl, with fake wood siding !

Ralph:

Right now, the 383 is sitting in my shed. I need to wait for my backyard to dry out or for it so I can get the 383 out of the shed, into my garage and on to the engine stand. I want to re-gasket the engine, replace things that are suspect and that make sense to replace while the engine is on the stand and then I need to clean and detail the engine.

I need to send the transmission that I pan to use out for new seals as a precaution since it has been sitting for several years.

As for gears, I want to get at least 3.55's and would consider 3.91's since I want to upgrade the engine down the road. I need to start shopping for a pumpkin with the right gears and a good sure-grip unit. I'd be happy with a 741 unit.

I am painfully aware of how for fun can snowball! The yellow Sport Fury was originally going to be a nice looking fun driver and that escalated and the car has a lot of NOS parts on it. I also started out in the MOPAR hobby in the early '90's with one project car and my collection now stands at eight after selling off several cars over the past five years to get the collection to a more managable size.

Bill is the right person for the task at hand. Bill will take his time, use all if his resources to build the quickest C-Body ever! I know we will one day see the first 11 second C-Body in the SuperCar ShootOut and Bills name will be on it... :aok

Actually, I already have some information from someone who has an 11 second '68 Sport Fury, however that car would not be eligible for this racing series.

IF the time comes that I have an 11 second Fury, I may be living with Ralph and Sharleen as my better half will have reached her limits with me..... :lol:

I just hope LV is not that only tracks that will let me run the car with its skirts in place...

Bill, welcome aboard. I've never seen a car like yours on the drag strip, I can't wait to see it in action.
