Another Underdog perhaps.... Last of the American GTO's. I strongly considered one of these before I built my Duster.

Not sure how much better it would be than a first gen Firebird.

Heres another car that would be very different mixing it up with earlier cars. Probably not much of a rival though.

If you didn't know, my musclecar resume started off fooling with second gen camaros and I have this soft spot for the all glory/no guts cars that immediately followed the "true" musclecar era. Because lets face it, even though the EPA castratated these cars and Detroit slapped on outlandish vinyl stripe packages in place of horsepower, once you get modifying them they are not too different.

With a certified combo I am sure you could run close to the mid elevens. Could you get a Super Duty GTO in 1974? You may be onto something Chris.

The only thing is the biggest power train I found is a 350 in 1974 in a GTO.

Yes, but a Pontiac 350 and 455 look identical on the outside!

There was no Super Duty in a '74 GTO, though it would have been badass if there was!
The motor in Jay Delaigle's '74 T/A would be legal in a '74 GTO. Jay's been in the 11.60's and his car is heavier than a GTO!

Their is our answer the first Certified sub 11.50 Pontiac. I did hear a Gen 1 Firebird went sub 11.50's but, I don't know how legal that was. At Atco and on the internet people said he had an aluminum block in the Firebird. No official announcement was made saying he was legal or not :shrug .

Ralph, rumors are rumors- unless there is evidence that it's true I don't think they should be thrown around on the internet.

That being said- just about any A, F or X-body Pontiac has the potential to run sub-11.50 times with proper development. Again using Jay's car as an example- for all of the work that he's put into his gorgeous T/A, I still wouldn't call it a Max-effort car. He's currently running 11.60s and chipping away at that number. It's still low budget compared to any of the top dogs AND it's still a pretty heavy car with A/C! More importantly, Jay's car is a lowly D-port car with crappy manifolds.

Now take a lighter car- like a first gen. Firebird, with great flowing round port heads and great manifolds...

Check out what Bill Knafel says in this vintage ad...

:agree, we just don't know. (Someone Does) What does suck is when the sanctioning body doesn't stop a rumor or clearify what racers saw and heard. You need to stand behind your racers especially those that do it right :aok .

You're right Jay's car is heavy and very quick. I think a Gen 1 Bird or a GTO like the one Chris is looking at would turn some heads. I have followed Jim Mino from the MuscleCar Review / SuperCar ShowDown days. Jim has always proven to run at the top in his Pontiacs. So we know it can be done.

I never heard about that particular dealership.
