Curious what folks are running in their machines given the reduced zinc in motor oil. Ralph, ever since you mentioned this at the Mopar Nats I've been looking into it more. My cars are street cars (flogged regularly :-D ) and all but two have flat tappets. I have been leaning towards Valvoline VR1, but it does not have detergents. The ZDDP Plus additive looks interesting as well, and cheaper ultimately.

Thoughts/ Suggestions?

I had been using Shell Rotella 15W 40 in my older MOPARS for years but the zinc rating has been reduced and Rotella has gone from SL rated to SM rated. Tractor Supply Companies house brand motor oil is still SL rated and therefore has a higher level of zinc, as I understand the ratings based on some threads over on MOPARTS.COM.

I also read somewhere else the some of the motorcycle oils have even higher levels of zinc and other additives that have been removed from modern oils for emmisions reasons.

Thanks guys. I had been looking at the Brad Penn stuff and had also read about "farm oils".

Not sure what I'll do. Leaning towards the ZDDF Plus...

I did some research, Brad Penn & Valvonline Racing Oil have enough Zinc for our Muclecar Motors. You can be purchased Valvoline at NAPA or any leading autoparts store. http://www.jegs.com/i/Valvoline+Racing/ ... 1/10002/-1 If anyone is interested in Brad Penn Oil we have it available to us for $55.00 a case.

Chris,
Yep, that would help solve the top end. I know much of the discussion relative to this issue centers around wiped out cams but I have got to believe there is an equal amount of exposure to the bottom end of the motor, ie., rod bearings, etc.

What's your take?

I'm about to hit up Ralph about the case of Brad Penn.
