I reached a good turning point last night. The previous owner cleaned and sprayed from the rear seats to the rear bumper with a Rustoleum "espresso" semi gloss brown which looked very close to the factory color I unearthed after removing undercoat. So I ended up finishing the job all the way to the firewall. It was a tedious and messy job but done now.

Last night in my custom 8x8 pop up spray booth, I sprayed the cowl firewall with a coat of black epoxy prime followed by Deere Blitz Black semi-gloss trying to mimic the extent of the overspray based on what I saw after cleaning all the underocoat/gunk off. Of course the original black color was dead flat and this seems to have a little too much of a sheen but perhaps with more cure time and handling it will knock down some.

With that done I am off to work on the subframe. After I had it blasted the factory welds are appalling. Looks like a Friday afternoon subframe after throwing back a 6 pack of Stroh's, so I am going to buzz some of the more critical joints with my 220 mig. I also have to install some mounting pad reinforcements as the steel between the rubber bushings is a little corroded.

Slow going, but still going.

I wanted to shoot the subframe in one shot so I devised a way to stand it up on dolly's.

My kid wiping it down. The roof of the canopy just touched the top of the frame so it got a coat of overspray. :P

After 2 coats epoxy prime and John Deere blitz black. I used a cheapie harbor freight gravity feed touch up gun which worked better than i expected.

I need to let it cure a bit longer before I take it down so I can blast the inside of the rails with some POR.

No field goal practice. The subframe is installed and aligned laterally and diagonally within 1/16" from the front leaf spring eye. I got a bunch of other parts bolted on. Next is reinstalling all the firewall/cowl stuff and then finish the suspension and brakes to get it back on its wheels. Its looking good just not going as fast as I expected. That's OK. I expect 2 kids in spring ball and the impending boating season will also hamper progress. But I'll just keep chipping away. I still haven't dropped the engine off to the machine shop yet. At this rate I'd be happy if I can take it on a fall foliage cruise with the family that it couldn't make last year because of a rod bearing.

I did discover that a 5 gallon pail of hardware I squirreled away almost 20 years ago after parting out a few F bodies came in very handy when looking for an odd nut or bolt.

Not a whole lot of progress but I got the engine parts to my regular machine shop guy. I ended up finding a block that did not need line honing, an original 1970 4 bolt main block. So its in for a bore/hone, square zero deck and the rotator balanced. It shouldn't take long as he churns out stuff faster for guys paying cash.

My other project that is taking priority is installing a new deck in my boat hopefully before Memorial day weekend, when my slip will be ready. But that has to happen outside, so Z28 work will occur when raining.....
