I actually made time to work on my own car for once. Last Friday I dug out the cowl induction hood that I bought for the car 6+ years ago.

Got it completely stripped, found some small pin holes, and some damage. Looks like someone took a ball peen hammer to it. But, still pretty nice for an original hood.

I put some sealer primer on it, and tucked it away in the garage with the car for now. The entire car is going to bare metal, it is a tedious process - but has to be done.

Looks like my car will be losing some weight... I had some time after work today. Stripped the driver's side quarter panel. Full of bondo. :bang

Brand new panel on the car, yet over 1/4" thick in places. And areas where the panel has been hit with a hammer. This is from when my father owned the car and payed someone to do the body work while he was ill from a surgery gone wrong. I am slightly upset right now.

Same area with a ruler to illustrate the depth of the filler, not even the worst area that I encountered.

Here my middle finger points to the area where the panel was attached and the seam is. My other finger points to where the panel has been hit with the pointed end of a body hammer.

And I am done... the panel is mostly stripped. You can see all of the dust on the floor from the filler I ground off. I may start on the driver's door tomorrow if I have time.

Sorry to hear about the amount of filler found. Could the panel have been a poor quality reproduction?

Reproduction panel, yes. Good as an original, no. Still doesn't explain someone beating it with a hammer and basically destroying the panel.

I just helped my father install the exact same panel in his 72' Malibu Pro Tour project. It won't even require a 1/4 of the filler mine had on it. I stand by my statement that the guy didn't have a clue about how to install the panel. I have been learning how to do this type of work over the past few years. Previously never had the confidence to try it. As a novice, I put out better work than what my car received.

This is just an example of live and learn. When the work was being done to this car, it wasn't mine. I had a home, was in a relationship that seemed to be heading towards marriage, and a very demanding job.

I took a picture of the quarter we installed on my father's car. This is what mine should look like. See how crisp the body line is? Same aftermarket panel as what is on my car, just not beat with a hammer by the village idiot.

I finally had some spare time last Friday. Stripped the driver's side fender, you guessed it... more bondo. :roll

I am off for a week from the 7th -13th, going to attempt to get the rest of the paint, etc stripped off the car.

I picked up a replacement quarter panel yesterday. Tomorrow will be the first free day I have had while on "vacation." Going to strip some more paint tomorrow.

Not much new to report. The entire car is ready to be blocked, except for the doors. Still have to cut the mangled quarter off of the driver's side. (Dreading that)
