Forgive me if I am mis-interpreting this...Rules seem to state that any 1968 to 1973 BBC rectangular port heads can be used on a BBC.

So, if my car is a 1970 Chevelle, am I limited to only the specific casting number that would have been offered on the particular motor I was to use, L34, L78, L89, LS5, LS6 etc, ?

Or could I use a cylinder head from say a 1971 LS6 ? or a 1969 L89 or the L88 (GM still sells this head).

Thanks for the help..

You cant use an aluminum head if the combo never had it
ie: LS6 cannot run an alum. head, but could run any steel rect. Port head that has a casting number that was around during those dates!
Date codes dont matter
ie: a rec. Port iron head 188 can be used even if it was made in say, 1988, because the casting number was around back in the day!

Of course the intake has to be correct also, so you couldnt run a rect. Port head on a oval port car/combo because it wont match up

So basically your options are limited to
Material-
No performance gain( subjective)-
Must accept other stock components-
Must have been available during time frame discussed
And, most importantly, ask before you spend!
We will try to help as much as possible!

In '71 the only production LS6 motor avaliable for resale was in the corvette. There were no rectangle port engine options in any other cars. I tried to prove it for a prior build, but, couldn't. For Chevelle and Monte platform was the LS3 402ci (oval head, lowrise intake) or LS5 454ci and believe it or not both engines used the same heads and intake, ie same casting numbers. But, those oval heads when ported DO flow very well. ask, ask, ask. spend money wisely.......

Thanks Guys,

I have a pump gas '71 Monte (10.30's) and a pump gas '70 Chevelle (12.30's). Would like to do the Chevelle as it is already in show condition. This will be for my son to race.

If I were to build an L-89 for the Chevelle, I could use AL heads ?. What casting numbers could I use for the heads. I could use a Holley Carb ?. ALuminum Intake as well ?

The only drawback I have with the LS-5 setup is the quadrajet carb and the weight of all the cast iron
with the LS6 is that I would have to use Rect port heads, I would rather use oval if I am going to use iron heads

Rectangular ports and Aluminum head I can work with. the L-89 seems to fit my preferences.

Just want to be sure before any $$ get expended.

Your rite on with doing a 70 chevelle so you can use a 4150 holley and alum. intake!
It would be the low rise alum. For 70'
The high rise maybe but some would want doc's on its use in 70!

The aluminum head 70 chevelle is a go as i did one before i went to the nova!

The 074 head would be correct, but you could also use the 842, or 077, as our rules allow!

Good luck and enjoy the build, some pix would be good!

Ralph, correct me if i am wrong, but i think this is correct!

Ted, Thanks Again, Your Chevelle and Nova are gorgeous and great performers. I am originally from your neck of NY, In Albany now. Look forward to coming to a few races. Unfortunately a back injury has kept me out of the car, but taking my son to get his learners permit tomorrow and he should be up and running this summer.

Thanks Ted..The Monte is my baby.

I lived in the Peekskill, Montrose area, went to Hen Hud HS. My brother lives and has a plumbing business in Lake Carmel, parents in Cortland Manor and sister in Peekskill area.

One more question..These heads that GM performance Parts sells, Any idea on Casting Number ?

Damn, i keep looking at the monte!
I have often thought it would be fun to make a big car like that work!

Seems like it wouldnt take alot to get that legal for our class :pop

A set of full caps, with white walls would be so unsuspecting!

Great color with the black top?

The Head in the link above says replacement for the L-88 head, which is the 842 I believe. Does that qualify ?

would like to avoid buying a vintage head soft aluminum and some one else could use it on their restoration as well.

Too bad the CNC'd AFR 335's on my Monte weren't eligible LOL...

The Monte was in November 2006 Hemmings Muscle Machines Magazine. That is original paint in the pics. Yeah I thought about getting it legal for the class, maybe down the road. You would be surprised on the combination, especially that it is running through full exhaust with 2 1/2" mufflers, It is pretty quiet. 10.31 at 130 with 1.43 60 ft, 3950 lbs with me in it.
It would usually get some attention like at Super Chevy events when one time the announcer asked the crowd "is that big boat even running" then the gutted camaro i was running in the time trial only saw my rear bumper the rest of the way.

My close friend Chris ran his Black Cherry '70 'velle at LVD with you guys a few weeks ago. He was impressed with your Nova.

i couldnt open that link but the head is more than likely the 401 casting nhra approved head for stock eliminator that gm calls there l88 replacement. That head is GREATLY improved in material and somehwat in performance as well. It does look different externally..made by edelbrock for GMPP

077s would be your best bet if your staying in supercars competition.

if the 401 got approved someone might not be happy but another someone would be....
