Just need a clarification on casting numbers. There are reproduction cast iron exhaust manifolds available (Ground Up, NPD etc.) for a 454 Chevy, however, the casting number is for a 70 LS-6 Chevy motor among a few others. The casting numbers for the LS5 are different and not reproduced and seem to be difficult to find as of now.

Do I need to have the actual casting number for the LS-5 or is the reproduction acceptable for a '71 monte carlo SS. Assume the car would be eventually certified.

Thanks

Tom

For certification you will need the correct LS5 Exhaust Manifolds, All Reproduction parts with the correct part numbers are acceptible,

Old thread, but have a question on this... the reproduction manifolds currently offered have a part # correct for a 68'-70'. 71' - 72' manifolds appear externally and internally identical, but have a different set of part #'s. Are the 68'-70' repros ok on a 71'-72' car? Or do we need to find a set of original 71'-72' manifolds because of the part #?

68'-70' use 3916178 RH & 3909879 LH vs. 71'-72' 3989343 LH & 3989310 RH. Both part #'s had versions with, and without smog tube provisions.

I have a mint set of 71' manifolds, non smog, and am not sure I want to take the die grinder to them just yet. I wouldn't feel as bad cutting up repros.

The exhaust manifold must have the correct part number from the factory or repro co.

That stinks, no one reproduces them with the 71'-72' part #s. They are physically identical manifolds other than the part #s.

I agree. "That stinks" Isn't the idea stock appearing. The rule is a good way to keep interested people out of the party.

I'll just have to watch Craigslist and look around at the local swap meets for some manifolds. I have a spare set, but as said before... I can't bring myself to modify them. The reproduction manifolds with the wrong part # would have just been a shortcut, no rust, broken studs, snapped off ears, or stripped threads to contend with.

And let me just be clear since it is easy to misinterpret things over the intraweb... not trying to rock the boat with my posts. Or say, "your rule is stupid." Etc. I was merely asking for clarification so I didn't make a costly mistake. I'd hate to pay $300+ for repro manifolds, then spend hours hand-porting them... only to have to remove them and sell for a loss.
