6.00 CAMSHAFT
6.01 Camshaft must produce a correct stock sound at idle.
Engine idle noise level will be checked using Radio Shack Meter 33-2055 Set on Filter C, Slow responce. Engine Idle will be measured @ 1000 RPM's in neutral or park, standing 3 Ft. away from the back bumper at waist height, the car in question must not exceed 108 Dba on the said meter.

This clarification was a long time coming. We tested a dozen Stock and Factory Appearing Musclecars that raced in the SuperCar Series in 2009 and came up with this acceptable sound level using the critaria above.

Ralph, whos' cars were tested? I will be needing a new cam, but, would still like to have a muscle car sound. I do realize that a pro-stock sound is not allowed but I don't want it to sound like a limo. Thanks

Mike to your point. The cars need to sound healthy but not like Popcorn poppers. I have a list of all the different cars we tested. This is a modified list that show different muffler choices as well as cars with headers and manifolds.

Findings @ 1000 RPM's, 3 Ft Away, Waist Height, w/ Filter C

1969 Road Runner 383 4BBL Conv W/Tips Reading 98 Dba OEM Mufflers

1971 Road Runner 440+6BBL W/Tipes Reading 99 Dba OEM Mufflers

1972 Demon 340 4BBL W/ Tips 100 Dba Flowmaster Welded Muflers

1969 GTX 426 Hemi 2x4BBL 3inch exhaust, TTI Headers, Flowmaster Mufflers 113 Dba

1997 Cobra w/ Super Charger, 95 Dba (Chris Kuskowski)

1970 Chevelle SS396 L89 104 Dba Dynomax Mufflers(Ted Daros)

No way an AAR or TA will pass that with the only available aftermarket mufflers (Dynomax).

No issues Brian, your AAR comes in at 100 Dba :aok .

this is a good rule, and puts to rest the question "how loud is ok"

the number we use should cover everyone, but keep it from getting further out of hand

I wish that I had a baseline of my car before I disassembled it. :(

@1000rpm? Maybe directly at the rear of the car.... We had the idle @ around 670-750rpm to keep the sound lower on the AAR.

Just out of curiousity does this mean idle quality is not in consideration? Meaning you can have any kind of a lope you want as long as it is below 108dba @ 1000rpm.

That is correct. The Rules reads; 6.00 CAMSHAFT
6.01 Camshaft must produce a correct stock sound at idle. Engine idle noise level will be checked using Radio Shack Meter 33-2055 Set on Filter C, Slow response. Engine Idle will be measured @ 1000 RPM's in neutral or park, standing 3 Ft. away from the back bumper at waist height, the car in question must not exceed 108 Dba on the said meter.

I understand that this is one way to make a clear cut rule. Are you not afraid of having a field of popcorn machines?

I don't understand your question?

The 108 Dba rule allows anyone to run any chosen cam that falls below the allowed sound level. If your thinking of installing a popcorn sounding cam and it comes in below 108 Dba go ahead and install it. Be prepared to remove it after you fail the meter. Don't forget your idle needs to be measured at 1000 RPM's. All the cars that run in our series fall into the rule. We are ok with the sounds of the cars that competed in our series in 2009. If you build a car that fits this rule your car will sound similar to the others competing in this series.
