What kind of clutch fan does everyone use; thermal or non thermal? Is there any performance difference between the two? Been researching this a lot more than I probably should and everyone has an opinion but no data to back it up. Just looking to replace my fixed fan. Thanks!

Non Thermal is the best. Very used is also the best I'll have Bill Dicicco talk about how good or bad they are. I have them on all my Race Cars.

Switched from a solid fan to a clutch, picked up 2\10's. Easiest improvement ever.

are clutch fans allowed per the rules in the factory stock class? I know in the pure stocks, stock fans are the only thing you can run.

Clutch fans are available from the factory.

A clutch fan is a factory fan. Flex Fans are aftermarket and not allowed.

I know they were factory offered but not all cars came with them. I'd like to run one on mine for a few free hp but it wasn't offered on the 351cj in 73, so per the pure stock rules It's not allowed.

per the supercar pure stock rules

"9.05 Fan must be factory original and correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed. No after-market "lightweight" flex-fans allowed". The way I read that is if your car came with a fixed blade fan, thats all you are allowed to run.

So sad to hear a 73 351CJ didn't come with a clutch fan. Not even the 2BBL version with A/C?

nope. I think the big blocks with ac MIGHT have had one but Ford seemed late to the game on some things sadly.

From what I have heard, Ford was trying to cut costs in the early 70's and the fan clutch was part of that cost cutting. Maybe Ford needed the money to put towards legal fees regarding exploding Pintos

LOL!!! probably more truth to that then we'll know. I heard the Fords don't really do too well in these pure stock classes because of the exhaust manifolds bein so restrictive to clear shock towers and for cost reasons. slap a set of headers on some of these old fords and they'll pick up a second or more. I know it did on a maverick i had with a 351w, used exhaust manifolds at first for mock up and cost reasons then splurged for the headers. dropped like 8/10ths right off the bat, after a re-jet it dropped another 3/10ths with no other changes.
