Quest for the Best 60' ft.

The quest for the best 60' ft in Stock Appearing Racing is what everyone that runs Polyglas tires looks to achieve. To Date the best 60ft on a Factory Appearing Stock Tire race car is around 1.70. This is using tires with tread above or at the manufactured wear bars. I thought I would take the time this year to document what it takes to get to the magic 60ft number. This spring some of the SuperCar racers have attended the Dave Morgan Suspension seminar and have learned the does and don'ts of suspension tuning. A couple of simple thing that kept coming up are understanding and learning from what your car is doing. Study your car before, during and after a run, study your cars attitude when it leaves the line, Does your car leave the same every time how does your car behave when you shift into the nest gear also when slowing down is your car easy to steer? Other more technical tuning tips will also be part of this post. From Scaling, Shock tuning, frame and uni-body and other best practices. This post is for all to participate in. Please feel free to add your cars info, issue and if you have overcome the issue what worked for you.

The cars I am going to be using are the 1966 Belvedere I and the 1972 Dodge Demon 340. The Belvedere has been on the track since 2009 and has had a best 60’ft to date of 1.89 and the Demon is a new build on the track since the fall of 2012 and a best 60ft of 1.92.

I want to clarify the definition of what a great 60ft is. A great 60ft translates into a 60ft in the 1.7’s. and a 1st gear to 2nd gear shift that plants the tires with minimal to no spin in the gear shift.

Ok, My best 60' has been 1.77 with a 3.73 gear, the car weighs 3616 lbs with me in it,
tires are f70-14 redlines at 26lbs, the engine when originally built and run on the dyno made
467 hp at 5800 rpm and 510 ft/lbs at 4800 rpm, but there has been a cam and carb change since. My converter is a 9 1/2" ptc converter that I know nothing about other than when it was made ptc knew what I was trying to do with the car. It flashes to about 3500, I think my car falls into an area of just enough power to turn an alright 60',but not enough to make it really difficult to hook up. The shift from 1st to 2nd is uneventful due to power level. I have tried to launch the car in many ways, from idle,both easing in and just flooring it. I have also tried to load the converter to about 3000 rpm and changed how I apply the throttle from just going all in, to holding the throttle steady and just release the brake and when the nose drops a touch go to full throttle, or what I currently do. I load the converter to about 3000 rpm, as fast as i can i put it to the floor and immediately come all the way off the throttle,then right back full, the tires spin two three times and hook. This seems to be the most consistent and quickest. :pop
