Ahh, the 3 digit security numbers. I know what thats like. Its well worth it in the end.

Is this all top secret stuff our do you have some details?? That car had a 625 AFB stock right?? Should be able to get it to breathe better.

Quote:
3.01 The carburetor must appear externally correct. The stamped part number need not be correct. Internal modifications are OK and larger CFM carburetors are allowed as long as they maintain the stock appearance of the factory correct carburetor. For example an 800 Quadrajet can replace an 750 Quadrajet as long as it appears externally correct, however a vacuum secondary holley cannot be replaced with a mechanical secondary Holley.

Darrell, your 67 should have come with a Carter AFB. The Edelbrock Thunder series carburators are Carter AVS's which are a different family of carbs. However, Edelbrock does make a large 800 cfm AFB under the Performer name that would fit the bill. You are encouraged to try to make the carb look like a vintage piece, I'm sure Ralph has some ideas. Living underneath the aircleaner it isn't much of an issue but tuning in the pits, a bright shiney new carb will look out of place in an otherwise vintage engine bay.

Darrell, It still can be fun. :D I'm just explaining the rules as they have been adopted. Sure the AVS has an easier adjustable air door than the AFB but its a different model. It's like a 4150 holley with a secondary metering block which uses common holley jets rather than a 4160 which uses the metering plate out back. Two different model carbs and I'd prefer one over the other if I had a choice, but that doesnt change the fact that a car with a 4160 should have a 4160.

If ya got the means to swap it for a big AFB then thats probably the best option, if not run it knowing its incorrect to get your combo dialed in then swap it out at a later date for an AFB.

If it makes you feel any better, the GM's and Mopars that were born with a small AFB now have big CFM carbs available thru the aftermarket and a full compliment of tuning parts just a phone call away. Look at guys like Steve Von Ahn who have to tweak an Autolite carb to run the number.

BTW, the reason you write here is because you love this place.

P.S. I would avoid bead blasting the carb. Being aluminum, I imagine there has to be a way to chemically etch or remove the shiny finish without risking blasting debris in places you don't want it.

D,
i have found it to be true nothing costs less than doing it right the first time.

can you run in fast with that carb.?

probably, until some one see's its incorrect or you go fast and they bust you in tech.

i am in a similar situation as i am planning "stuff" for next year and trying to do it on a buget.
good luck D

go for the right part or use the old until the car is good and a worked oem will then be another improvement.
