Run during the 23rd Annual Mopar Collector's
Guide, Mopars @ E-Town Nationals
The 2009 Mopars @ Raceway park Englishtown NJ event found
itself to be filled with the usual Mopars that have migrated to this event
throughout the years. The purists never fail to come back year after year.
Some have chose not to attend this event due to weather or other reason.
But, those that came back found themselves treated to something new this
year.
The SuperCar ShootOut series was invited to run an all
make Factory Appearing musclecar race at this event. The chatter on the
internet was mostly positive leading up to the race, with many excited
to see the class open to all makes.
It seemed like in years past, weather played a part in
the schedule of this event. Saturday was forecasted to be the better of
both days, with Sunday being the day we would most likely be rained out
of any competition.
The SuperCar ShootOut's original plan was to qualify
on Saturday and run elimination on Sunday. But, with a grim forecast on
hand, we decided, along with Raceway Park's track official, to run the
event on Saturday. If the weather looked good on Sunday, we would
be invited to run an additional race on Sunday.
With our plan in place, we set of to run three rounds
of qualifying followed by eliminations. With a field filled with Mopars
and GM's, the pressure was on for the Mopar camp to make sure a Mopar was
the victor at the end of the day.
The competition was fierce and strong all day long, with
eight factory appearing musclecars competing for the honor of Top Eliminator.
A newcomer to the SuperCar Series was John Slavin and
his remarkable 1969 Camaro L78. John, a seasoned racer, has followed the
Pure Stock and Factory appearing ranks in the past years. In 2009, John
decided to join the group and take part in the season.
Another new racer recruited by the group is Rhett Moody.
Rhett has a gorgeous 1968 Barracuda 340 that is no slouch. Fitted loosely
in the SuperCar Rules, Rhett's Barracuda runs in the mid twelves.
Chris Kuskowski, Dominick D'Alonzo, Dalton Beaulier,
Billy Atwood, Scott McKenzie and event organizer Ralph Barbagallo were
racers that came out to the Spring Ice breaker and made the treck to Mopars
@ E-town to continue to better their E/T's and tune their musclecars.
With mills like 396, 340, 440+6, 426, 350 all on hand
to do battle, who would of thought the underdog of the day would take home
the top honors. When the dust settled on Saturday, Chris Kuskowski, with
his 1972 Duster 340, won the battle.
